Serzone Class Action: Moving Forwards
As depression seems to have become a staple of modern day life, more of the first world's population looks towards anti-depressants to help them cope with the stresses and strains that modern living seems to thrive on. Although going to a doctor and asking for help can seem very difficult, many people find that counselling and medication can really help them to pull through. However, the drug Serzone put a different slant on the term "helping people" in the recent past and the controversy rages on with no sign of abating thanks to the Serzone class action of 2004.
Serzone was branded one of the new wonder drugs as more and more of the American public seemed to constantly battle against depression. Many of the anti-depressants available on prescription previously seemed to turn them into zombies and took away the value of life they had left. In some ways, the pills did not seem like a viable solution, but then again neither did living to many. One thing that the drug Serzone did not do that other drugs had up until that point was quash the libido of the average person. Sex was the last thing on the minds of individuals taking normal antidepressants, but the drug Serzone actually helped sexual appetite rather than hinder it. For this reason alone it was the best selling drug in the USA. That is, until the Serzone class action began.
Although the Serzone class action came to a head in 2004 when both manufacturers Bristol-Myers Squibb and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were sued as a result of the negative side effects that could be experience by those on the drug Serzone, it had been discontinued in 2003. Most of the countries in the world took it off the shelves that they had previously given it pride of place on. It had been FDA approved, but the Serzone class action found the FDA liable for any harm caused to those who took it. In fact, the FDA was criticized for taking no action against the medication to begin with when reports began to leak out about possible severe liver damage as a result of the drug Serzone. The Serzone class action was taken by many different consumer and civil groups that decided to protect the average individual from more harm than the depression that they were suffering from previously could actually cause them!
The Serzone class action did have very real results and was a victory for people suffering with depression everywhere. The drug Serzone is no longer sold in most countries of the world, although it can still be found in pharmacies from time to time. However, the Serzone class action did more than just take a harmful medication off the shelves. It educated the public about the possible risks that they were taking with any drug and not just Serzone. The moral of the Serzone class action story is definitely try to take every other means possible before you turn to medication because you never know how it might affect you.
